DataServices World Spring 2008
Power Panel
Ken North moderated a panel discussion about the importance of middleware and data services. The panel was a general session for attendees of all three co-located conferences and it was webcast to a live audience. The panel included Andy Eaton (VP, EnterpriseDB), John Goodson (VP and General Manager, DataDirect), Dr. Bill O'Connell (CTO, IBM), Nikita Ogievetsky (VP, Morgan Stanley), John Senor (President, iWay Software),
Andy Eaton discussed cloud computing and grid technology, noting that EnterpriseDB's version of PostgreSQL is available via Amazon Web Services.
John Senor discussed SOA as an enterprise information integration (EII) solution and Nikita Ogievetsky discussed information modeling and linked data. John Goodson pointed out that JDBC and ODBC middleware can still be a potential performance bottleneck, even in SOA environments. Bill O'Connell discussed best practices for mixed mode environments that include SOA, data warehousing, BI and online transaction processing (OLTP). Mark Hapner discussed the next wave of software that more closely integrates web applications and SOA.
Several panel members discussed the importance of governance in scenarios involving SOA with integration services, BI, databases in the cloud, web applications. In response to an audience question, there was consensus that :● Mainframes and legacy data will remain with us for the foreseeable future
● Many organizations will not adopt SOA to supplant mainframe applications
● SOA and mainframes can be complementary, not mutually exclusive, computing alternatives.Workshop
Mike Gorman of Whitemarsh Information Systems, a long-time participant in ANSI H2 activities, moderated a data services workshop presented by Dr. Michael Carey, Dr. Carlo Innocenti and Mike Pizzo. The three instructors used a common schema and use case to present three approaches to data services. Mike Carey illustrated the solution using AquaLogic Data Services Platform. Carlo Innocenti used Stylus Studio and XQuery. Mike Pizzo used Visual Studio, LINQ and ADO.NET data services.
