DataServices World Fall 2008
Power Panel
Conference Chair Ken North moderated a panel discussion about the future of database in an era of SOA and cloud computing. The DataServices World Power Panel was open to attendees of the SOAWorld, Virtualization and Cloud Computing Expo conferences. The panel included Geoff Brown (CEO, m2mi), Peter Coffee (Director, salesforce.com), Dr. Stefanos Damianakis (CEO, Netrics) and Eric Samson (CTO, DataDirect Technologies).
Geoff Brown discussed whether virtualization, cloud computing federated identity and security concerns for data services change the model for authorization and authentication. Stef Damianakis discussed ensuring data quality and consistency in environments with distributed databases and data integrated from disparate sources. Eric Samson discussed a data services architecture for virtualized, cloud and SOA environments. Peter Coffee discussed cloud computing and the distinction between software as a service (SaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and platform as a service (PaaS).
All panel members discussed whether cloud computing was going to confine SQL databases to the dust bin of history. There was consensus this would not happen. The panel discussed that:● Cloud computing and relational databases are complementary technology and the cloud does not make SQL obsolete
● Organizations that adopt SOA and cloud computing will typically integrate data from SQL data stores
● Many early adopters of cloud computing will go after 'low hanging fruit' such as log storage, disaster recovery and hosting e-mail before putting mission-critical applications and databases in a cloud computing environment.Workshop
Peter Coffee, long time eWEEK columnist and Director of Platform Intelligence at salesorce.com, moderated a data quality and data services workshop. The workshop presenters included Dr. Stefanos Damianakis, Tom Tague (VP, Solutions at Thomson Reuters), and Dr. Carlo Innocenti (Director, XML Programs at DataDirect Technology). The three instructors presented three aspects of data services. Minollo Innocenti used Stylus Studio and XQuery to demonstrate integrating information from disparate sources. Tom Tague explained the Calais initiative and a data service for tagging text, HTML and XML content. Stef Damianakis discussed solutions and techniques for addressing data quality issues and ensuring data consistency.
